How Do bed Bugs Spread?
Bed bugs can spread around inside homes much faster than you would imagine. Bed bug infestations most often start when bed bugs catch a ride on purses, suitcases, luggage, and backpacks.
Bed bugs usually spread in these ways:
- Infested materials brought home by college students
- Traveling from an infested hotel
- Bringing infested furniture inside
How Do Bed Bugs Move Around?
Bed bugs do not have fully developed wings, so they are unable to fly. They also are unable to jump long distances like similarly-sized bugs (fleas, for example). Bed bugs move around by crawling, which they do very slowly, but they are quite stealthy about it. Because they tend to hide near their food source, there’s no need to be quick about it. After feeding, they’ll return to their hiding spot until they are hungry again. In rare cases, you’ll catch bed bugs crawling on your walls.

Do Bed Bugs Spread Rapidly in Bristol and Johnson City?
As was mentioned previously, bed bugs are not quick movers. They cannot fly or leap long distances. So how do they spread from room to room so well? They do so by latching onto purses, backpacks, suitcases, or luggage, and being carried around from place to place. This is why bed bug infestations are often linked to recent travel, and why it is important to be careful not to bring them home with you from vacation.
Bed bugs may not be the best crawlers, but they are great hiders and know how to get around their own way. Especially because of their quick life cycle, it is important to do all that you can to prevent them from spreading.
Are Bed Bugs Contagious Between People?
Although bed bugs usually spread by latching onto suitcases and purses, they are not contagious in the sense that one person can directly pass them to another. Bed bugs do not fare well in heat, so they do not live on humans. Although they aren’t contagious in any direct sense, it is very common for bed bugs to spread from building to building through humans’ belongings.
