What Do Termites Damage?
If there is a source of wood nearby, termites can possibly infest and damage it. Especially when the wood is in contact with soil, you are at threat of a subterranean termite infestation.
Termites can infest structures and items both inside and outside your property in Bristol TN. Termites will commonly cause the most damage to the following:
- Support beams
- Flooring
- Posts
- Wall studs
- Insulation
- Sheds
- Lumber
- Wooden decks
- Outdoor furniture
Why Do Termites Infest Wood?
Termites survive on cellulose, which is a substance found within wood. Wooden items or structures are especially vulnerable if they are in contact with the soil. Most homes are built primarily with wood, which is why termites find your property so appealing. Inside, this means your walls, support beams, drywood, ceilings, floorboards, baseboards, windows, and insulation. In your backyard, termites can infest piles of firewood, roof tiles, patio furniture, decaying logs, and more.

Termite-Resistant Materials
Termites are known to infest wood, but can they infest metal or other materials used to build homes? The good news is that there are several termite-resistant materials, including one or two types of wood:
- Redwood/cedar: These types of wood are somewhat naturally resistant to termites. However, decay can attract termites to both of these.
- Cement/concrete: Termites will not eat through these, as the material is too solid and lacks cellulose. They can make their way through small cracks in concrete, however.
- Treated lumber: Treating lumber can prevent rot and make it undesirable to pests. This is why treated lumber is often used in new builds.
- Metal: Again, metal does not contain cellulose and is thus not suitable for termites.
