Termite Identification

Termites are occasionally mistaken for ants. They also vary in size and appearance. Typically, termites are no bigger than ½” and vary in color from off-white to brown.

In Tennessee, we deal with Eastern subterranean termites and, occasionally, formosan termites. Subterranean termites are the most common and destructive termite nationwide.

The main signs of termites include mud tubes, frass (termite droppings), shed wings, and damaged wood. Noticing any of these means it’s time to call for professional help.

Due to our climate, termites can be more or less active all year long. However, they will swarm in the spring months as they spread to form new colonies, which is when they are often seen.

Termites live a unique life cycle: A termite nymph will molt several times before being assigned a specific role, or caste. These castes include workers, soldiers, and reproductive termites.

Found in every state but Alaska, termites are one of the most common pests. They are more common in regions that experience a humid, wet climate.

A termite infestation can spread when they swarm. A colony can also spread within a structure if the infestation grows over time before being discovered.
